Vice President Global External Manufacturing & Strategic Sourcing


Extensive experience in pharma manufacturing and business analytics

Define and shape supplier strategy and relationship through account plans, targets and projects in collaboration with suppliers and functional managers, proactively manage and improve supplier performance (KPI dashboard), serve as 1st point of escalation if issues cannot be resolved by functional team members

Scope: Global Responsibility

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Lead Supplier Relationship Teams (SRT’s) based on suppliers, comprised of quality, technical stewards, development, facilities, sourcing to ensure Celgene standards are met

  • Supervises varying levels of team members across multiple geographies to enable best in class supplier management.

  • Manage performance of the suppliers and SRT’s:

  • Serve as primary point of escalation for issues / KPIs

  • Set targets for the suppliers KPI dashboards

  • Set goals for SRT members and functional heads

  • Maintains business review governance with suppliers and review KPIs with suppliers and internal teams

  • Ensure implementation of CAPAs – communicate changes and issues with suppliers

  • Set resource plans and budget for SRT:

  • Lead major projects to improve supplier performance

  • Project and account plan (launches, capacity, changes, etc)

  • Develop and implement 3-5 year strategic plan for supplier accounts in collaboration with

    Technical Commercialization Teams (TCTs)

  • Provide technical expertise in area of responsibility

  • Prioritize and lead innovation ideas in collaboration with suppliers and GPDO cross functions

  • Assure the SRT has ‘one voice’ to 3rd parties – coordinate across Celgene and supplier functions and leadership teams

  • Provides detailed analysis for make vs buy decisions and recommendations in line with network strategy.

  • Manage the total supplier spend linked with commercial external manufacturers, contract service providers and suppliers for DS, DP, API, Packaging and Starting materials.

  • Provide support to Strategic sourcing initiatives – providing both expertise and direction to contracting for supply of commercial product and to procurement agreements.

  • Develops a plan for the relevant technology platform with a wide strategic view incorporating best in class practices, changing scenarios in the space and with consideration of Celgene portfolio needs in the 3-5 year horizon.

Key Performance Indicators

  • Quality: CAPA cycle time, rejected batches, etc.

  • Supply: OTIF, Inventory, Customer Service to Internal sites from External

  • Cost: Write-offs; Value Creations, Spend

  • Launches on time.

General and Leadership

  • Leads with a global mindset and directs multiple remote teams.

  • Leads and serves as the role model for an organizational culture that embraces respect and collaboration, passion and engagement, trust, integrity and accountability, innovation and growth, quality, productivity and continuous process improvement.

  • It is expected that incumbent will continue to grow organizational capability and acquire experience/expertise in new technology areas to reflect the expanding Celgene product platforms.

  • Responsible for developing the appropriate KPIs and executive dashboard in alignment with goals, objectives and strategy. This will include KPIs for internal and external manufacturing operations.

  • Advocates for discipline excellence by partnering closely with internal and external stakeholders to improve customer service and develop and capture industry-competitive best practices.

  • Influences enterprise-wide business decisions through the on-going leadership of the Capital review process. Willing and able to work hands-on and with a sense of urgency, in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.

  • Demonstrates personal leadership and develops team members to grow the capability of the function

Skills/Knowledge Required:

  • A minimum of 10 years’ pharmaceutical operations experience. Specific experience in biologics, oral solids, sterile injectable highly desirable.

  • Life sciences or engineering degree required and additional degrees desirable (preferably an M.B.A).

  • Member of Institute of Procurement or similar, preferred

  • Very strong leadership, communication and influencing capabilities

  • Must have advanced analytical and presentation skills

  • Experience in 3rd party (external manufacturing) operations and relationship management

  • Knowledge of best practices within Supply Chain & Purchasing

  • Experience with day to day supplier management activities and with strategic elements.

  • Strategic sourcing, procurement, contracting experience preferred.
