Informatics and Predictive Sciences has a mission to drive predictive informatics research across Celgene, with focus on Research & Early Development, Clinical R&D and GPDO. The role of IPS encompasses a broad range of computational research, from cutting-edge bioinformatics to discover new therapeutic targets, to applied machine learning to optimize clinical trials and predict patient outcomes.
The GPDO function focuses on production of our novel therapies, from their development for manufacture, quality operations and manufacturing systems, to therapeutic delivery and supply logistics.
The successful individual will provide a key link between IPS capabilities and GPDO leadership to develop the strategies, approaches and resources needed for predictive leverage of data drawn from across GPDO activities to inform decisions and drive operational excellence.
Key areas of initial focus will include:
Optimization of drug product properties and manufacturing processes via analysis of chemical, biological, process monitoring and quality operations datasets.
Multivariate regression and mathematical modeling to forecast key aspects of product development, manufacturing and supply logistics across therapeutic development milestones.
Predictive machine learning to accelerate product formulation and development, with focus on in-licensed therapies, and leverage of RWE datasets to elucidate complex relationships that underpin effective drug delivery.
Beyond these initial focus areas, the role will drive a predictive culture within the GPDO organization and take responsibility for identifying and acting upon opportunities for applied analytical research that yield tangible benefit to patients. Key collaborators and stakeholders will include IPS colleagues, engaged in work towards high-priority objectives in other corporate functions. An additional component of the role will be to partner with computational research, knowledge science and IT colleagues to align data generation with infrastructure, innovative approaches and data integration strategies that enable full leverage of product development, manufacturing, and RWE data sources across GPDO and beyond.
The position requires an individual with demonstrated scientific leadership experience and excellent communication and collaboration skills. Keen interest and hands-on expertise in the inter-disciplinary application of advanced analytical methods to life sciences and industrial operations data are imperative.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Build strong relationships with leaders in the GPDO function, identify and develop collaborative analytics use cases that add value to key objectives.
Develop algorithmic and data-driven approaches aligned to GPDO objectives, including leverage of leading methods from related fields.
Guide development of infrastructure and analytical capabilities aligned to embedding data-driven decision making within the GPDO function.
Catalyze a predictive culture across the GPDO function, by demonstrating benefits of leading analytical research in key application scenarios.
Collaborate with IPS colleagues to identify areas of synergy and integration of data and methods applied in other business functions.
Contribute to broader data analysis and predictive methods strategies across the business as required, including assessment of 3rd party capabilities.
Present strategies, approaches, results and conclusions to Celgene colleagues and external audiences.
Recruit and supervise research staff as required.
Background experience & complementary knowledge:
Ph.D. in computer science, mathematical modeling, operations research, or related fields from a recognized higher-education establishment.
10 - 12 years post-doctoral experience of predictive analytical research, preferably in industrial, clinical or university environments.
Publication track-record in use of analytical methods to elucidate and drive decisions in complex research scenarios.
Proven experience in development and application of novel algorithmic approaches to optimize processes and/or accelerate data-driven decisions.
In-depth knowledge of contemporary machine learning, pattern recognition and data-mining techniques, paradigms and application scenarios.
Hands-on experience of data integration, mining & visualization, and development of multivariate models, preferably applied to business operations.
Substantial experience of research direction in a progressive computational science environment.
Strong knowledge of contemporary data and computing infrastructures, open-source analytics tools and database structures.
Proven problem-solving skills, collaborative nature and adaptability across disciplines.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Fluent verbal and written English language skills prerequisite.

There are more than 300 clinical trials at major medical centers using compounds from Celgene.
