Executive Director, Business Development
Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:
The Business Development group at Celgene identifies, evaluates and transacts on a variety of external opportunities including mergers and acquisitions, licensing, co-development/commercialization and other collaboration agreements and equity investments. The Executive Director within BD will be responsible for leading primarily later-stage (POC and later) transactions supporting both Corporate and BD objectives.
Lead / Drive evaluation of new business opportunities.
Work in close collaboration with the Franchise leadership teams and Search & Evaluation counterparts
Form, lead and facilitate cross-functional diligence teams on late stage acquisition and licensing opportunities.
Lead negotiation teams and formulate proposed offers for business development transactions – including term sheets through definitive agreements.
Form effective relationships with key stakeholders and potential external partners, and demonstrate the ability to influence processes and outcomes.
Create clear business cases that outline strategic rationale, key opportunities and risks, financial value and recommendations.
Interact regularly with Celgene executive level management and update management committees on ongoing business discussions.
Concurrently manage 4-6 projects (domestic and international) of complex business opportunities. Requires consistent prioritization of projects with other BD team members and alignment with corporate objectives.
Capable of preparing or leading the preparation of all appropriate deal materials, including, but not limited to, market and financial analyses, clinical development and regulatory plans, term sheets and final deal documentation.
Ability to work effectively with external advisors such as investment bankers, attorneys and due diligence consultants. Can serve as lead Celgene representative in such matters.
Represent Celgene at external meetings, conferences, and seminars to access new opportunities and to develop external network. Can serve as lead Celgene representative in such matters.
- Bachelors degree in business, finance, biology, chemistry, or related science. MBA, PhD/MD or PharmD preferred. At least 10 years of experience in pharmaceutical business development required. A strong understanding of drug development, regulatory processes, sales & marketing or finance is required. Prior licensing and acquisition experience required
Experience conducting late stage diligences and transactions in the biotech/pharmaceutical space.
Prior Hematology & Oncology and/or Inflammation and Immunology experience strongly preferred.
Demonstrated understanding of clinical drug development, regulatory and commercialization processes. Including, but not limited to, clinical operations, regulatory strategy, intellectual property, financial modeling, commercial operations and competitive landscape assessments.
Ability to lead a team. Must demonstrate the ability to lead cross-functional deal teams and drive to a decision through open communication, dialogue and a “getting to the truth” mentality. Ability to lead via influence vs line authority.
Capable of coaching and mentoring a team of junior business development colleagues.
Very strong oral & written communication skills.
Strong industry knowledge and experience.
Ability to work in a fast-paced, matrix organization.
Excellent critical thinking skills. An ability to make quantitative and qualitative assessments and judgements
Requires a strategic outlook and ability to prioritize and drive what is best for Celgene.
